I was very keen to watch this movie and had high hopes. But …
The Star Wars connection
It was hard not to be actively looking for SW overlaps, much verbiage has been uttered on the internet about this script/idea being pitched to Lucas films and subsequently Disney without success.
Whilst I could tick off a number parallel archetypes and scenes, my advice is to not read any of the internet drivel / marketing propaganda if you can and watch without preconceived notions.
The Seven Samurai connection
Similarly the same drivel should be ignored as alludes the seven samurai but that’s it. It does an inept job of gathering them together or giving us a real sense as why they are invested.
What was missing
All these things made me feel nothing for the characters or invested the story:
- Completely devoid of any humour or lighthearted moments
- No pithy one liners
- Leaving anything to the audience’s imagination
- Building tension (except for one scene early on)
